The problem of acidity and acid reflux is very common these days amongst people of all ages. This is a serious health concern and is becoming very recurrent day by day. Acid Reflux is a condition of heartburn, which can easily be cured by adding certain foods to your diet which are very effective.
What is Acid Reflux?
Acid Reflux is a common condition of burning pain, also known as heartburn, in the lower chest area. A common myth is that heartburn is related to the heart. However, heartburn has got nothing to do with it. It occurs when some of the acids move from the stomach to the oesophagus, into the gullet, which actually helps to move the food down from the mouth.
The stomach contains hydrochloric acid that breakdowns the food and protects against pathogens such as bacterias. The stomach has a special lining which protects it from the harmful effect of hydrochloric acid. However, the oesophagus does not have any such lining.
A ring of muscle, the gastroesophageal sphincter, normally acts as a valve that lets food into the stomach but not backs up into the oesophagus. When this valve fails, and stomach contents are regurgitated into the oesophagus, the symptoms of acid reflux are felt, one of which is heartburn.
Other symptoms of acid reflux include burning sensations in the stomach, throat, and heart; difficulty in swallowing; bad breath, sour throat; indigestion; nausea and restlessness.
People who might face acidity more often are those:
who consume excessive alcohol
who are obese
who often consume spicy food
who often consume an excess of non-vegetarian food
who take Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)
women nearing menopause
women who are pregnant
You must include these foods that can improve acid reflux and can also reverse it.
Green Vegetables such as beans, broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower, cucumber and leafy greens help the body to recover from acid reflux as they are low in sugar and fat, thus reducing acid in the stomach.
Ginger has natural anti-inflammatory properties and it is a natural treatment for heartburn and other gastrointestinal problems. You can consume small pieces of ginger in the form of juice or tea. It helps to ease the symptoms.
Oatmeal is an excellent source of fiber. It absorbs acid in the stomach and reduces acidity symptoms. Oatmeal with fiber-rich vegetables is the best meal to consume when suffering from acidity.
Non-citrus Fruits such as melons, banana, apples, and pear are less likely to trigger reflux symptoms than acidic fruits.
Healthy Fats such as avocados, walnuts, flaxseeds, olive oil, sesame seeds oil, and sunflower oil helps in easing acidity. You must reduce your intake of saturated fats and trans fats and replace them with healthier unsaturated fats.
A high-fat diet should be strictly avoided as it delays stomach emptying. Apart from this, here is a list of foods that should strictly be avoided if you experience acid reflux.
Citrus fruits like grapefruit, lemon, oranges, etc.
High intake of salt
Slices of bread
Heavy, large meals
Acidity can be easily cured if proper precautions are taken in your meals. Avoid the listed foods as much as possible to get rid of acidity. Acidity can lead to other health issues too, so don’t ignore it. Eating the right way can completely reverse your acidity in no time!
