What is PCOD?

With so many changes in lifestyle these days, it has been seen that Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) is affecting one in ten women. PCOD is a hormonal disorder and women who have polycystic ovary have multiple small cysts in their ovaries. It usually occurs when the sex hormones go out of balance and the body starts producing more male hormones resulting in the onset of several symptoms.

What are PCOD Symptoms?

The most common symptoms of PCOD include irregular periods, uncontrolled weight gain, acne, and unusual hair growth.

Many times there are no such symptoms and this condition goes undetected. For some women, this condition is diagnosed when they’re trying to get pregnant since this condition causes problems with fertility.

What are the causes of PCOD?

The exact cause of PCOD is unknown, although it is believed that hereditary and environmental factors result in this condition. Excessive production of the hormone, androgen can also cause PCOD.

How can PCOD be cured?

There is no permanent cure for PCOD, although the symptoms can be altered. Modifying one’s lifestyle can be helpful in doing so. Bringing about lifestyle changes such as including healthy diet and regular exercises in your daily routine can help in treating PCOD.

  1. Exercise: Moderate exercise has been seen to enhance the normality of menstrual cycles and reduce androgens that add to the abundance of hair development. It is important to know that walking for at least 30 to 90 minutes a day can be helpful in treating this condition in the long run.

  2. De-stressing yourself: Stress has been found to be another factor contributing to this condition. Keeping one’s mind free of stress is significant for a healthy mind and body. Yoga and meditation help in reducing stress.

  3. Eat healthily: Having a diet with low carbohydrates, low sugar, low salt, and high fibers and high proteins is recommended for women who are affected with PCOD. Altering one’s eating habits has proved to be very helpful in curing this condition.

Following are a few foods that can be included in the diet for curing PCOD:

  • High fiber diet: Women with PCOD become resistant to insulin and thus are not able to use the produced insulin effectively. Therefore, to produce productive insulin levels, you must include cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower, beans, lentils, legumes, sweet potatoes, and berries in your diet.

  • Omega-3 Rich Foods: They help to lower bad cholesterol level and boost good cholesterol level. Food such as fish, olive oil, nuts and seeds are rich in Omega-3.

  • Lean protein: Include tofu, chicken, and fish in your diet. These foods help to keep a check on high insulin level and aids weight loss too.

  • Low glycemic diet: Women with PCOD are insulin resistant. Therefore, it is advised to take a restricted carbohydrate diet. Low glycemic foods include fruits and vegetables, and foods made from whole grains, whole wheat, and whole four.

  • Anti-inflammatory foods: PCOD may also cause inflammation which in turn causes hormonal imbalance. Increasing the intake amount of tomatoes, kale, spinach, almonds, walnuts, and olive oil in your diet can help in reducing PCOD symptoms.

Foods to avoid during PCOD:

  • Processed foods: Make sure you limit the number of processed foods such as junk food, canned products, and fried foods, as they contain high sodium and may also contain unhealthy fat. It will only worsen the condition, so it’s best to avoid such foods.

  • Dairy products: A regular consumption of dairy products will increase testosterone levels and further elevate PCOD symptoms. Instead, prefer having skim milk than full-fat milk.

  • Refined carbohydrates: High content of carbohydrates leads to conditions such as diabetes and excessive weight gain in PCOD affected women. Foods such as white bread, pasta, sugary foods should be avoided as they lead to a high blood sugar level.

  • Soy products: Avoid all soy products as these products can cause a delay in ovulation and may lead to complications in pregnancy.

Can green tea help to cure PCOD?

Green tea plays a vital role in helping to cure PCOD. Firstly, it is loaded with antioxidants which helps in lowering stress. Natural Green tea also helps in keeping you calm and helps fight depression. Next, it helps in burning fat more effectively, thus reducing body fat and weight. Further, it is also proven to improve insulin sensitivity which is very beneficial for women suffering from this condition.
